## Glossary of Key Terms

**Death doula:** A trained non-medical professional who provides holistic, non-medical support and guidance to dying people and their families. Also called end-of-life doula or death midwife. Not a medical provider.

**Direct cremation:** Cremation without embalming, viewing, or formal services beforehand. Typically $700–$2,500. The most affordable disposition option in the United States.

**General Price List (GPL):** An itemized price list that all funeral homes are legally required to provide under the FTC Funeral Rule. Must be given to anyone who asks in person. Allows families to compare costs and select only what they want.

**Advance directive:** A legal document stating a person's healthcare wishes if they become incapacitated. Includes living will and healthcare proxy (also called durable power of attorney for healthcare).

**Death certificate:** An official government document certifying a death occurred. Required for life insurance claims, bank account access, property transfer, and most estate settlement tasks. Families typically need 5–10 certified copies.

**The 175 tasks:** Renidy's documented list of administrative, logistical, legal, and emotional tasks families face after a death. Examples include: notifying Social Security, closing bank accounts, canceling subscriptions, notifying employers, handling property, writing an obituary, planning a service, coordinating vendors, and dozens more. Forms the foundation of Renidy's planning system.

**Palliative care:** Medical care focused on relief from the symptoms and stress of serious illness. Can be provided alongside curative treatment. Not the same as hospice.

**Hospice care:** A type of palliative care for people with a terminal prognosis of 6 months or less. Focuses on comfort rather than cure. Medicare covers hospice for eligible patients.
